Palu, Donggala, and Mamuju.
Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

On the evening of 28 September, a strong earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, triggering a strong tsunami that hit fishing communities and towns. Victims are estimated in hundred of thousands. The death toll is now over 830 and expected to rise as many remain trapped under the rubble or are in areas that have yet to be reached by aid. From early information, it is known that many houses, schools, places of worship and public infrastructure have been destroyed or damaged.

Emergency Needs
Our team has deployed to Palu, the town that was devastated by the tsunami to deliver life-saving aid and conduct an assessment of emergency needs. Infrastructure such as water supply, roads, power stations have been severely affected which means that it will be more difficult to get basic aid to the thousands affected by these disasters. Aftershocks continue, and structures are unstable, which has lead to large scale displacement.

Urgent donations are needed for the following:

  • Tents and tarpaulins
  • Clean water
  • Water purification tablets
  • Torchlights and batteries
  • Hygiene and dignity kits (soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, pail for bathing, sanitary napkins, underwear, sarong, towel)
  • Nutrition for infants and lactating mothers
  • Mosquito nets
  • Sleeping mats and blanket
  • Solar panels
  • Wheelchairs, and
  • Generators.

We will also use a small portion of the funds raised to pay for transportation costs for a few experienced humanitarian specialists from our emergency team to travel from Aceh to Central Sulawesi to directly assist not only in distributing the aid but also in supporting disaster-affected communities through the emergency period. The team will also assess further needs such as trauma support, community level disaster preparedness and risk reduction.
